BESS EXPERT (Battery Energy Storage Systems) - PHILIPPINES

LOCATION: Philippines

COMPANY OVERVIEWCN Green Roof Asia (CNGRA or the Company) is an investor/developer funded by Climate Fund Managers (CFM) and Norfund. We develop renewable energy projects across Southeast Asia (SEA) to contribute to climate mitigation. CNGRA currently has assets in Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

POSITION SCOPE:

The BESS Expert will be the company’s primary technical authority for developing and implementing commercial & industrial (C&I) and mid-scale solar-plus-storage projects across Vietnam, the Philippines, and Indonesia. This role supports the full project lifecycle—from early-stage feasibility, energy modelling, financial inputs, EPC coordination, QAQC, to commissioning and performance monitoring.

The position ensures that all BESS solutions align with CNGRA’s investment model, including project bankability, risk mitigation, Tier-1 technology selection, and compliance with country-specific regulations and utility interconnection standards

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Technical Consultation & System Design:

  • Provide expert guidance on Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) design, configuration, and integration with renewable energy sources (solar, grid, etc.).
  • Conduct feasibility studies, energy modeling, and technical due diligence for BESS projects.
  • Support the evaluation and selection of battery technologies (e.g., lithium-ion, flow batteries) based on project requirements, performance criteria, and lifecycle considerations.
  • Ensure compliance with grid interconnection requirements, safety standards, and applicable regulatory policies.
  • Support operations across three markets, with occasional travel as required.
  • Design BESS applications for commercial and industrial (C&I) customers, including peak shaving, time-of-use (TOU) shifting, zero-export compliance, ramp-rate control, and solar clipping capture.
  • Define battery sizing methodologies, including assumptions on cycles per day, C-rate, round-trip efficiency (RTE), degradation modeling, energy overspill, backup duration, and grid constraints.
  • Develop BESS single-line diagrams (SLDs), protection philosophies, fire safety concepts, and ensure compliance with local electrical codes and standards (e.g., Philippine Electrical Code, Indonesia PLN rules, Vietnam QCVN/EVN requirements).
  • Perform Owner’s Engineer–level technical reviews of EPC and OEM proposals (e.g., Huawei, Sungrow, BYD).
  • Translate system design and technical requirements into RFPs, scopes of work (SOW), inspection and test plans (ITP), QA/QC checklists, and FAT/SAT protocols.
  • Utilize BESS simulation and optimization tools (e.g., HOMER UL) to optimize system design and performance.

Project Planning & Coordination:

  • Develop detailed technical specifications, project schedules, and cost estimates for BESS implementation.
  • Collaborate closely with Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) teams to optimize system design, constructability, and deployment strategies.
  • Identify technical, commercial, and execution risks, and develop mitigation strategies to support smooth and timely project delivery.
  • Work cross-functionally with Development, Finance, Legal, Project Management (PM), QA/QC, and Operations & Maintenance (O&M) teams to ensure BESS designs meet technical, commercial, permitting, and long-term operational requirements.
  • Provide key technical inputs to financial models, including assumptions on cycle life, degradation, usable energy, charging strategies, warranty limits, maintenance costs, and round-trip efficiency.
  • Review and evaluate EPC and OEM proposals, and support negotiations on technical specifications, warranties, performance guarantees, and long-term service agreement.

Performance Monitoring & Data Analysis:

  • Conduct performance modeling, energy yield analysis, and efficiency optimization of BESS systems.
  • Utilize advanced Excel (including Macros, VBA, and data analytics) and simulation software to analyze energy storage performance and forecast operational outcomes.
  • Develop dashboards and reports for real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and performance insights.
  • Troubleshoot system performance issues and recommend optimization strategies to maximize reliability and efficiency.
  • Support the development of EMS logic, control strategies, and interoperability with OEM EMS.
  • Review and validate SCADA/EMS data to ensure accurate dispatch profiles, energy throughput, and warranty-compliant operation.
  • Analyze cycle history, depth-of-discharge (DOD) profiles, degradation KPIs, alarms, fire-safety logs, and BMS behavior to support continuous system performance improvements.

Regulatory Compliance & Industry Standards:

  • Ensure BESS projects comply with local and international energy storage regulations, safety codes (e.g., UL 9540, NFPA 855, IEC 62933), and environmental guidelines.
  • Stay up to date with industry trends, emerging battery technologies, and energy policies affecting BESS deployment and operations.
  • Support clients in securing necessary permits, approvals, and incentives for BESS projects.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of IEMOP procedures and WESM trading dynamics, including market participation, settlements, and regulatory interfaces.

Stakeholder Engagement & Client Advisory:

  • Collaborate closely with utilities, developers, investors, and policymakers to assess market potential and evaluate investment feasibility for BESS projects.
  • Deliver technical training and knowledge-sharing sessions for internal teams and external stakeholders to build capacity and understanding of energy storage systems.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports, whitepapers, and presentations summarizing BESS project analyses, findings, and recommendations
  • Support business development teams in proposal preparation, client meetings, and pre-sales discussions, providing technical expertise and insights.

POSITION HOLDER REQUIREMENTS

 Formal Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, Power Systems, or a related field.
  • Minimum 7+ years in BESS design, deployment, and optimization, preferably in Southeast Asia
  • Proven track record of managing multi-country projects and working with diverse stakeholders.

  Experience, Skills and Knowledge

  • Expertise in battery technologies (Lithium-ion, Flow Batteries, etc.), grid integration, and energy modeling tools.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; proficiency in MS Project, Primavera P6, and advanced Excel.
  • Familiarity with regulatory frameworks, safety standards (UL 9540, NFPA 855, IEC 62933), and permitting processes.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills for training and stakeholder engagement.
  • Experience in using BESS software (e.g., HOMER) for energy modeling, system sizing, and performance assessment.
  • Proven track record of establishing and managing strong supply chain relationships to ensure reliability and efficiency.
