Supporting Equal Access to Education: Focus on STEM
Mon 05, 2023
Bridging the gender and opportunity gap in STEM
Across Indonesia, access to higher education remains unequal for many young women, particularly those from low-income and under-represented communities. Financial, geographical, and gender-related barriers continue to limit opportunities, especially in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) – fields that are critical to supporting Indonesia's transition toward a sustainable, renewable energy future.
Developed through comprehensive assessments conducted jointly by Green Roof Indonesia and Hoshizora Foundation, the Green Roof University Scholarship aims to help overcome these barriers. By empowering future female engineers and technical professionals, the program contributes to building a more inclusive and highly skilled workforce for Indonesia's growing green economy.
Programme’s approach
Green Roof's commitment extends beyond tuition sponsorship. Throughout the four-year scholarship period (2026–2030), awardees will participate in mentoring, capacity-building sessions, and renewable energy-related learning. By aligning the program with the needs of the renewable energy sector, Green Roof helps ensure that beneficiaries gain not only academic knowledge but also relevant skills and industry exposure. Continuous mentoring and alumni engagement further support the program's long-term impact.
Selected awardees and academic institutions
Following an extensive multi-stage selection process conducted between April and July 2026, 10 outstanding scholars were selected from across Indonesia.
The scholars were chosen through a transparent, multi-tiered selection framework designed to identify high-potential candidates demonstrating academic excellence, resilience, and genuine financial need.
All selected students have successfully gained admission to three of the country's leading public universities, such as Universitas Indonesia (UI), Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) and Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM).
Their chosen fields of study closely align with the technical priorities supporting Indonesia's renewable energy and industrial transformation:
Advancing the shared mission
Our mission has always been to ensure that financial circumstances never define a child's future. Through Green Roof University Scholarship, we empower the awardees to dream big, develop the resilience to overcome challenges, and grow into individuals who use their knowledge and skills to care for others. In the future, we hope these 10 awardees will not only become outstanding professionals, but also future leaders who inspire positive change wherever they go."
Shared by Yudi Anwar, Executive Director of Hoshizora Foundation
Through our partnership with Hoshizora Foundation, we aim to raise awareness of the importance of equitable access to higher education for women in STEM. This programme reflects Green Roof Indonesia’s commitment to education, gender equality and renewable energy, and encourages more young women to pursue higher education. It also demonstrates the value of cross-sector collaboration in creating lasting social impact and building broader support for similar initiatives.
